It’s beginning to look a lot like retail stores have once again put out Christmas decor waaaaay too early. And while I love Christmas and decorating and gorging myself on far too many cookies, it’s always unsettling to be reminded that I once again need to buy gifts.
It’s not that I don’t love Christmas shopping or finding the perfect gift for the people I love. It’s the process that’s maddening. For me, it starts with figuring out what each person might like. Then I need to hunt down stores where I can find those items. Then I need to do some complicated shopping season calculus to determine when the absolute best time to make my purchase will be (so, you know, I can get the best price). What can I say? I’m a nut.
But if you feel nutty this time of year, too, you may appreciate this guide I’ve put together. It should help you navigate the complex holiday shopping terrain. Or at the very least, it should give you a few good ideas – and hopefully some great deals. Let’s look at 5 cool places to shop for Christmas gifts, shall we?
1. Uncommon Goods
I’ve bought a few gifts from this online marketplace for a variety of holidays. The thing that’s cool about Uncommon Goods is that they offer a lot of, well, uncommon gifts. Many items are customizable or can be personalized. Plus, they span the gamut of interests, so you’re sure to find something for everyone, even your quirky niece who’s into Dangerous Games to Play in the Dark (um, what?).
2. Etsy
I love Etsy! Mostly because I also sell my prints and printables there. However, I have also purchased many-a gift from this great marketplace, including some customizable items that really left an impression. I love supporting other small businesses and I could spend hours perusing some really impressive handmade goods. Kudos to anyone who has an Etsy shop because I know firsthand how much work it is. Also, thanks for being creative.
3. Amazon
Boooooo! Hissss! I know, I know – why promote small business on Etsy only to follow it up with a nod to this online giant? Well, mostly because you can find anything on Amazon. Literally anything. So while I strongly suggest you support small business first in your gifting endeavors, I also acknowledge that tougher stuff to find might be available on Amazon. Also, they have great wrapping bundles, so even if you don’t get your gifts here, you may find a great deal on wrapping paper and bows.
4. Costco
[Cheering and endless clapping] Everyone loves Costco. Why? Because where else can you get a SEVENTY-TWO POUND WHEEL OF CHEESE? Hello! Also though, don’t buy that. However, you can and should browse the many other more reasonable items they offer, from clothing to electronics and more. It’s a great one-stop-shop for all your Christmas shopping (and snacking) needs.
5. Your Local Neighborhood Shops
Shop local! Do it! Small businesses work hard to keep up with the Amazon’s of the world. They also care a ton about what they do – and their customers (you!). Take a walk around your ‘hood to see which shops you may have missed. Keep an eye out at indoor farmer’s markets for items that might make great gifts for loved ones. You won’t be disappointed.
